Puerto Exterior is a country project. This is the largest investment at the moment in Chile, with a view to the next 100 years. Its development is in charge of Puerto San Antonio for the benefit of Chile, its foreign trade, the national economy and the sustainable development of San Antonio and neighboring communities.
This important initiative will require an investment of 3,500 million dollars, earmarked for port infrastructure, road planning and urban spaces.
The governments of presidents Ricardo Lagos Escobar, Michelle Bachelet Jeria, Sebastián Piñera Echenique and Gabriel Boric Font have ratified the importance of the execution of this project and the role that San Antonio has and that Puerto Exterior will have as the gateway to Chile.
The Outer Port has been designed to mobilize up to 6 million TEUs (a 20-foot container) per year and receive class E container ships. These ships have a length (length) of about 400 meters and a maximum capacity of 15,000 TEU. This new work will have eight berths for large ships and two terminals of about 96 hectares each.
The 17 Super Post Panamax type STS cranes of each terminal will be distributed along the docks. Each one of them will be handled on site by an operator who will move an average of 30 containers per hour.
This design allows serving 5,000 trucks daily. Additionally, the port will have all the necessary infrastructure for the development of the activity, with facilities for the supply of drinking water and electricity to the ship. In each terminal there will be a heliport to handle evacuation maneuvers if necessary.
The port will remain operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week, both for the attention of ships, trucks and trains, thus achieving that the average time of attention of an E-class ship is 14 hours, in the standard of the most important ports in the world.
This project has been developed as a reflection of the philosophy of Puerto San Antonio and has been conceived for the community, thus seeking to contribute to the generation of shared value for the community, the province of San Antonio and the growth of the country. .
The port has the best infrastructure conditions, location in front of the main logistics centers of the country and relationship with its neighbors. San Antonio residents identify with their port and history: 80% value the project as "very important" for the country and the province.
